Overture of “Welcome New Year” in Magnolia
Magnolia is a culture melting pot. Children come from different continents and counties, therefore their home towns are far away from China. It is like an alluvial plain of culture and there are so many festivals on the calendar.
Chinese New Year or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese New Year vary widely. People will pour out their money to buy presents, decoration, material, food, and clothing. It is also the tradition that every family thoroughly cleans the house to sweep away anyill-fortune in hopes to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red colour paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of “happiness”, “wealth”, and “longevity”. On the Eve of Chinese New Year, supperis a feast with families. Food will include such items as pigs, ducks, chicken and sweet delicacies. The family will end the night with firecrackers.
As New Year is becoming closer and closer, the atmosphere in Magnolia comes to stronger and stronger. Teachers and children are busy with decoration. We hung red lanterns and put on Spring Festival couplets on the door, waiting for coming of children every day and the end of this year.
Since next week, there will be the last important events of Magnolia, which is Welcome New Year half-a-day activity. Parents and kids can experience half a day in the Magnolia. You can sing New Year songs together, do New Year decorations together, and cook New Year food together which is children looking forward mostly.
Therefore, we should believe that children are living in “House of Tomorrow” which was written by Gibran. Faced with different cultures, they could imbibe nourishment from the tiny, including festival decoration, clothes, food and customs, and then internalize to their memory and experience of this world, people and culture. These are what we devote ourselves to. In abundant topics and teaching activities, children could be unconsciously influenced.
